Utkarsh 2010 - Flashback...
Utkarsh- A National Level Paper Presentation Competition organised by N.L. Dalmia Institute of Management Studies and Research has always come up with topics that are in tune with the changing times.
This is evident from the the fact that the topic for Utkarsh 2010 was : "Next Big Challenge for HR – The Post Recession”. The global econony was reeling under the effects of recession. Improving productivity and profitability was the key to survival for companies. Every operation was being fine tuned and every department was working at its optimal level.Thus, recession brought along with it abundant challenges and opportunities.
In the wake of all this, what were the expectations from the HR function and how HR could contribute to the overall growth of the organisation was the focal point of Utkarsh 2010.
Utkarsh 2010 was keenly contested by various management colleges across the country. The top two honours were bagged by N.L. Dalmia Institute of Management Studies and Research and Atharva Institute of Management Studies. The other 3 finalists were Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies, Chetana's Institute of Management Studies and Research, Alkesh Dinesh Modi Institute for Financial & Management Studies.
All the above the partcipants brought something new to the table making the entire experience highly enriching.
The stage is now set for Utkarsh 2011.

Utkarsh 2011 - Rules and Regulations
RULES AND REGULATIONS
- Nature of the Event:- Paper Presentation
- Team size:- Min 2 – Max 3 students
- Multiple entries from each institute are allowed.
- Who can participate:-
All 1st & 2nd year students of full time MBA OR equivalent program can participate in this event.
- A Team can have students of 1st year only OR 2nd year only OR a combination of 1st & 2nd year students. A student can neither be a part of more than one team nor can one team make more than one report submission.
- FLOW OF THE EVENT:-
(I) Elimination Round:
Confirmation of your participation can be done by mailing your report to hrbatch.nldalmia@gmail.com latest by 27th December, 2010, Monday, midnight in the below given format:
Part A: Cover page
(i) Institute details:
a) Name of the Institute
b) Address
c) Phone number
d) Email ID
e) Name of the college coordinator
f) Contact number of the college coordinator
(ii) Participant Details:
a) Full name of the participants
b) Course name
c) Year of passing
g) Email ID
h) Contact number
Note: To maintain the anonymity of the participants as well as the institute in the screening process, the name or any other details of the team members or the institute shall be mentioned on the cover page only. Kindly ensure that such details are not revealed on any other page failing which the entry will be disqualified.
Part B: Softcopy Submission of the report inclusive of an Actual / Recommended Model + Live Case study.
Format of the report will be as follows:
· Maximum 750 Words.
· Report should be in A4 size format
· Times New Roman, Font size:12, Line Spacing: 1.5, Justified
· Please ensure that you mention “Utkarsh 2011” in the SUBJECT of your email when you mail the soft copy.
(II) Final Round:
- On the basis of the report, 5 short listed teams will be declared on January 3, 2011, Monday and will be communicated via email and phone.
- Topic of the presentation will be same as that of the qualifying round.
- The number of participants and the people participating cannot be changed.
- Participants will have to carry college Identity card for the final presentation
- The 5 finalists will have to develop a research report based on the study done on minimum 2 colleges and minimum 3 corporates (with minimum 500 employees) of their choice and mail it to hrbatch.nldalmia@gmail.com latest by 19th January, Wednesday. They can include their own college as one of the colleges as a part of the research.
· The report should be Maximum 3500 words.
· The format of the report is same as mentioned above.
· Teams should not disclose name of institute or participants anywhere in the report or in the Final Power Point presentation but only mention their respective codes for identification.
- The Final presentation shall not be more than 20 minutes:
· At the end of 15 minutes a warning bell shall be given
· At the end of 20 minutes the final bell shall be given indicating the participants to terminate their presentations at that moment itself.
· This shall be followed by a 10 minutes Question & Answer session by the panel.
- The participants are allowed to use any mode of presentation also. Eg: Role plays
- The overall weightage of research report is 50%. The weightage of final presentation and question & answer is 50%.
- The final presentations will be judged by independent, eminent professionals.
- Identity of the teams will not be revealed to the judges.
- Scores will not be disclosed & decision of judges would be final. Any disputes arising are subject to Mumbai jurisdiction.
- The Dress code for the final presentation would be:
· Males: Shirt, Trouser, Blazer with or without tie
· Females: Shirt, Trouser, Blazer or a Formal Saree
- Violation of any of the above rules will lead to an immediate disqualification of the team without any further discussion.
Note: Accommodation facility will be provided to shortlisted teams coming from outstation cities on the date of the competition.

Utkarsh 2011- Guidelines
Guidelines
1] Assume you are a consultant hired by a B- School in collaboration with a corporate company.
2] The objective given to you as a consultant is: ‘On the basis of primary and secondary research, recommend a Structure for HR studies that would lead to ‘Day 1 Productivity’ for a B- School graduate joining the corporate world.
3] Actual B- Schools and corporate companies should be taken for the purpose of the research. For the purpose of the competition, a corporate company means any company employing at least 500 employees. A B- School means any institute offering MBA or an equivalent program in India.
4] For the elimination round, the participants are expected to submit an actual or recommended structure based on secondary data collection and analysis. This structure should be supported with a live case study i.e. example of a corporate company or B school which is successfully implementing it.
5) Teams selected for the finals are expected to submit a Research Report which should be inclusive of:
- Research methodology
- Secondary and Primary data
- Method of Data collection
- Data Analysis
- Recommendations
